Suzuki SX4 Sport Touring Package

2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport

A strong small-car entry, with a sporty drive character and sleek (for an econobox) looks, the SX4 does a good job of engaging the driver. No, it's not even close to sports-car territory, but as a spirited point-A-to-point-B machine, we have no problem recommending it to those shopping in this segment.

For starters, the 2.0-liter aluminum I4 is peppy, with peak torque available relatively low in the rev band at 3500 rpm. Its 143 hp also does a decent job of getting the car up to speed, though we often had to work the throttle fairly hard. The automatic transmission offers smooth shifts and quickly downshifts when you need to summon extra speed; no doubt the five-speed manual would help make things more interesting, but the auto is fine.

We're most impressed by how well it handles. KYB shocks and 17-inch rubber on a small car make it quick to respond to steering inputs and keeps body roll to a minimum. Steering has a nice, weighty feel to it, and the chassis overall is solid. Ride quality is also good.

One major complaint we had is with the A-pillars. They are wide, and the rake of the windshield means they obstruct any decent peripheral vision. It's most annoying when performing turns.

With Suzuki entering the World Rally Championship full time with a five-door version of the SX4 next year, maybe Suzuki will roll out a hopped-up version for public consumption. Now that would be one killer econobox ride.
