Subaru Legacy concept headed for show debut | detnews.com | The Detroit News

A new Subaru Legacy is on the way next year.

Subaru -- the automotive arm of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. -- plans to use the 2009 North American International Auto Show next month to showcase a new Legacy concept sedan.

The concept will highlight the direction of future Legacy sedan design beginning in 2010. It is expected to be more muscular, with distinctive front fascia and flared wheel arches, Subaru announced today.

It will continue to be equipped with Subaru's 3.6-liter horizontally-opposed Boxer engine and all-wheel drive.

The Legacy was first introduced in the U.S. market in 1989 and next year it will celebrate its 20th anniversary.

It is manufactured in Gunma, Japan and Lafayette, Ind. Total worldwide production has reached 3.6 million units, with the United States accounting for 43 percent of all sales.

With U.S. sales up 0.8 percent, Subaru has bucked the industry's severe downturn this year, in part because of the redesigned Forester and the Impreza line.
