Saab seeks tax breaks for Royal Oak HQ | detnews.com | The Detroit News

Saab Cars USA is seeking state and local tax breaks to open a U.S. headquarters in Royal Oak once the brand is sold by General Motors Co.

Saab is looking to invest $2.2 million over five years to relocate mostly sales and marketing employees from the Renaissance Center to an industrial building at 4327 Delemere Court between 14 Mile and Normandy. The company, which did not specify how many employees would move, also is eyeing a site in Connecticut.

Snagging Saab would be a coup for Southeast Michigan and follows news that another castoff brand, Hummer, is looking at opening a headquarters in Metro Detroit.

"The most important thing is keeping them in Michigan, but if it works for us, too...," said Janet Gekiere, business development and marketing manager of Ronnisch Construction Group, which owns the 13,000-square-foot building being eyed by Saab.

A lease has not been signed but if Saab moves in, the construction company, which has offices in the building, would relocate locally.

The Royal Oak City Commission will hold a public hearing Monday to discuss Saab.

Swedish sports car maker Koenigsegg Group has agreed to buy Saab and a deal is expected to close by the end of this month.

On Sept. 29, Mike Colleran, president and chief operating officer of Saab Cars USA, asked Royal Oak's planning department to establish an industrial development district, the first step toward getting a tax abatement. Colleran said the tax break would help justify Saab locating its headquarters in Michigan versus Connecticut, according to a letter sent to Timothy Thwing, the Royal Oak planning director.

Thwing said it is premature to say how much of a tax break Saab might be offered but any abatement would cover personal property.

Bridget Beckman, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Economic Development Corp., would not comment on incentives being discussed with Saab.
