OnStar executive is bearish on e-mail

Automakers these days seem to be doing all they can to make their vehicles the rolling equivalent of a home office, living room and entertainment center all packed into one.

Between DVD systems, iPod-friendly devices and features such as Chrysler LLC's Swivel-'n-Go seating, drivers can do almost anything as they navigate rush hour or speed down the Lodge.

But at least one General Motors Corp. exec believes a line must be drawn somewhere.

Chet Huber, president of OnStar, GM's roadside assistance and navigation feature, was fielding questions from reporters this week when one asked if the automaker planned to figure out a way to deliver e-mails to drivers while they're on the road.

Choosing his words carefully, Huber pointed out that the vast majority of drivers spend their time on the road with no passenger. They're drivers, he said, "whose first responsibility is the operation of the vehicle." Of all the things GM wants to do with OnStar, Huber said, "e-mail is not a top item on the list for lots of reasons."
