Hummer could go to India’s Tata or Mahindra

Hummer could be the next acquisition target on Tata’s list now that its purchase of Jaguar and Land Rover is complete. The Indian conglomerate has previously expressed interest in developing more SUV models, especially for the U.S. market, and with Land Rover already in its hands Hummer could be next.

This week GM announced it will conduct a strategic review of Hummer with the possibility it could be sold, either partially of fully. Now, India’s Economic Times is reporting that that bankers representing GM have approached both Tata Motors and rival Indian manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) about buying Hummer.

Hummer’s May sales were down a staggering 60.2% on levels just one year ago, and the brand is unlikely to remain in GM’s hands or be sold to rival Japanese or American carmaker.

M&M is planning to launch a new compact pickup in the U.S. next year and the company was one of the initial bidders interested in acquiring Land Rover but dropped out after Ford tied the SUV brand with Jaguar for the sale of the British labels.
