GM Works on Fix-Itself Cars |
GM has posted interesting information at the official company’s blog about the new vehicle they are planning to make. The GM research and development manager, Alan Taub, has made a statement that the cars they are making “won’t crash and eventually will drive themselves”.
The new vehicle will be ready for the 2015. It is going to combine “lane-keeping and stop-and-go adaptive control”. The body of the car will be built of shape-changing material, Nitinol: it is a new alloy of nickel and titanium. In the beginning this shape memory material will be used for bumpers and body moldings and will make it possible to eliminate any damage from minor bumps. The way it works is pretty easy: Nitinol expands when heated and when it comes back to the normal temperature, the material shrinks straightening up all the dings.
Alan Taub also said that the company is working on fuel-cell technology and hopefully, the new car, Chevrolet Sequel, is going to run on hydrogen. The manager admits that the costs of the research and development are becoming high and the company has to find alternative ways to design the fuel-cell cars.
