Chrysler eyes 2011 for profit | detnews.com | The Detroit News

Fiat's retooling of Chrysler foresees the littlest of Detroit's Big Three making profits by 2011 and paying off its bailout loans by 2014, officials said during Wednesday's daylong debut of what a post-bankruptcy Chrysler will look like.

The profit forecasts are based on big cuts in expenses that already are under way; economies of scale from sharing parts and vehicle platforms; and a volume increase that calls for doubling U.S. and worldwide sales in five years.

It will be a big gain from the $1 billion loss that Chief Financial Officer Richard Palmer said would be coming this year, after Fiat picked up the most promising remnants of Chrysler LLC in bankruptcy. And it will take a $23 billion investment in plants and infrastructure, research and development, and marketing to completely revamp the wilted Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram truck brands, officials said.

"You cannot invest $23 billion if the expectation was not to rebuild these brands," CEO Sergio Marchionne said. "There's a huge amount of cash being consumed by the business."

The ambitious scenario predicts an operating profit based on 1.6 million or 1.7 million vehicles sold next year, including 1.1 million to 1.2 million in the U.S. In 2008, the old Chrysler sold 1.5 million vehicles in the U.S., and a total of 2 million worldwide. The company is projected to make a net profit once it can achieve global sales of 2 million vehicles, Palmer said in his presentation.

Chrysler projects a 10 percent to 11 percent share of the U.S. market next year, and a 13 percent share in 2014. For October, the automaker claimed only a 7.9 percent share.

The profit plan relies heavily on increased sales of Jeep and Chrysler, with those marques moving twice the number of cars in 2014 than they are projected to sell in 2010, and almost three times what they're expected to sell this year.

Palmer noted the projections were based on a conservative annualized sales rate of 11 million in 2010 and 14.5 million in 2014.

Marchionne knocked what he sees as wasteful tendencies at the old Chrysler to build too many vehicle platforms. He singled out the new Chrysler 300 platform, which doesn't support any other vehicles.

"You can't make money doing this," he told the assembled reporters and analysts. "I can't even tell you the amount of money spent on the new 300 platform. You'd be shocked out of your pants."

Palmer said Chrysler Group will start reporting financial results publicly, with 2009 fourth-quarter results being issued by April 30.
