Chrysler Group LLC is delaying the return of the second shift of workers at its Belvidere, Ill., plant by more than a month. "Continued stresses on the automotive supplier base," is the explanation the automaker gave Monday in announcing the 850 affected workers will be recalled in mid-November. The original plan was to increase production starting Oct. 5, adding 10,000 Dodge Caliber compact vehicles to help replenish supplies after the fuel-efficient hatchback proved popular during the "cash for clunkers" incentive programs. The automaker said Oct. 5 was a stretch and there were concerns whether all suppliers could increase the shipment of parts that quickly. In the end, one supplier could not and Chrysler decided to postpone the production boost to ensure a smooth return for the shift. There is no impact on output of the Jeep Compass and Patriot, which also are made at the Belvidere facility. The second shift will help build the last of the 2009 models and then prepare to assemble the 2010 Dodge Caliber, with a new interior, in early December. There are 1,890 workers on one shift at the plant. This week Chrysler is using the Frankfurt auto show to display a diesel-powered Caliber to bolster sales in Europe where diesels are more popular than gasoline engines.
