![]() Chrysler Group LLC and Fiat SpA will offer the public a family portrait of sorts at next month's Frankfurt auto show. To mark the alliance of the two automakers, cemented on June 10 after Chrysler LLC exited bankruptcy, the brands of both companies will share a display hall at the Frankfurt show, which opens to the press on Sept. 15. That means Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep, for the first time, will be in the same building with members of the Fiat Group, including Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Lancia, Ferrari and Maserati. Collectively, they will occupy most of Hall 6, with a Hyundai booth at one end. Sergio Marchionne, who is CEO of both Chrysler and Fiat, will be a busy man at the German auto show, where both companies will unveil product upgrades. While he is expected to be mobbed by a media eager to learn more about his product plans for both companies -- and Chrysler in particular -- Frankfurt will not be the setting to unveil Marchionne's vision, said spokesman Gualberto Ranieri. Marchionne and his management team are working to combine the best of both automakers to create vehicles to benefit both. The first Fiat for the U.S., the 500, could go on sale next year. And the Dodge and Alfa Romeo brands are sharing product development and distribution plans to branch into each other's traditional markets. Both Chrysler and Fiat will unveil 2010 updates to existing vehicles in Frankfurt. The Fiats will not be sold in the U.S., but future versions of some will come here. Chrysler will have five vehicles on display. Its focus will be on the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot with improved interiors and a 2.2-liter diesel engine for Europe. Additional uses of the 2.2-liter diesel should help Chrysler on another front: increasing the number of diesels it buys from former parent Daimler AG. Daimler and Chrysler are disputing a supply agreement because slow sales have resulted in Chrysler buyer fewer diesels. Daimler wants payment to make up for the volume shortfall. Inability to solve the matter led to Chrysler filing a lawsuit in New York bankruptcy court Aug. 21 accusing Daimler of refusing to honor its contracts and of extortion for not shipping other key parts needed in such vehicles as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300. Chrysler seeks an injunction to ensure the continued flow of parts. Daimler said Wednesday it believes the claims are without merit and plans to contest the lawsuit "vigorously," said spokeswoman Julia Engelhardt. "This is not a dispute about Chrysler's rights to existing contracts transferred to it in the bankruptcy case," Engelhardt said. "Rather, Chrysler has been asking Daimler to change existing agreements and enter into completely new agreements." The German automaker contends that it has been willing to negotiate. "Daimler remains willing to solve the remaining issues with Chrysler on new and modified supply agreements amicably," Engelhardt said, adding Daimler agreed to deliver parts on an interim basis before the lawsuit.
